Coordinating financial assistance for JSU students

The Financial Aid Office at Jackson State University coordinates financial assistance (federal, state, institutional, and private) offered to students. Our fundamental purpose is to make it possible for students to obtain an education who would otherwise be unable to do so.

Financial assistance is awarded to students in an effort to assist them with funds needed to pay educational cost — the difference between the actual cost of attendance and what a student can afford to pay as determined by the family's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) calculated by FAFSA. A Financial Aid Award may consist of grants, loans, employment, scholarships, or a combination of these programs.

Students seeking federal financial aid are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Jackson State University's priority deadline is April 15th each year. Submit early to maximize your aid eligibility.

Step-by-step application process

Step 1
Create an FSA ID
Create your Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) at studentaid.gov — you'll need this to access and sign your FAFSA.
Step 2
Complete the FAFSA
Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the April 15 JSU priority deadline. List JSU as one of your school choices.
Step 3
Applying for Financial Aid
Follow JSU's application guidance for required forms, supporting documentation, and verification materials.
Step 4
Submit Required Forms
Complete and submit any additional Financial Aid forms requested for your specific aid package.

Aid that may make up your award package

A Financial Aid Award may consist of any combination of these five aid programs — tailored to your individual eligibility and financial need.

Merit & Need-Based
Scholarships
Institutional scholarships, departmental awards, and external scholarship resources. The Scholarship portal handles applications, eligibility requirements, and awarded scholarships.
Federal & State
Grants
Federal Pell Grants, state grants, and other gift aid that does not require repayment. Eligibility is determined by FAFSA results.
Federal Borrowing
Loans
Federal student loans — Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, and Parent PLUS loans. Information on borrowing limits and repayment terms.
Student Employment
Work Program
JSU work programs and student employment opportunities that help cover educational costs while gaining work experience.
Federal Aid Program
Federal Work Study
Federal Work Study program providing part-time employment to students with financial need, allowing them to earn money for educational expenses.
Service Timeline

21 business days for document processing

All documents submitted to the Office of Financial Aid can take up to 21 business days for processing. To prevent delays, please verify the following before submission:

Verify documents are filled completely, legible and signed.

Check that documents that require a signature have HANDWRITTEN signatures; no typed or electronic signatures are acceptable.

Verify that all documents contain the student's name and J-Number.

*Business days do not include the weekends, holidays, and all other unspecified days the university is closed.
