Research & Economic Development
JSU's conduit for sponsored programs, research compliance, technology transfer, and federal congressional initiatives — helping faculty, staff and students secure externally funded grants, contracts and cooperative agreements.
Welcome to Research and Economic Development
The Office of Research and Economic Development at Jackson State University is the conduit for the university's interactions with the local community, state, nation, and the world in the area of sponsored programs. The achievements of the university's faculty, staff and students, along with the expertise of the university's scholars are shared with the broader community.
The Division creates, promotes and supports a research environment by helping faculty, staff and students identify opportunities and secure externally funded grants, contracts and cooperative agreements.
The Office supports the President's Office in identifying and acquiring resources for special initiatives to advance the mission of the university. It works in collaboration with all divisions and units to promote JSU's vision.
Five oversight areas
Administrative oversight within the Office includes:
Sponsored Programs
Research Compliance
Tech Transfer & Commercialization
Federal Congressional Initiatives
Strategic R&D Initiatives
Building a transparent research pipeline
A leader in promoting excellence among all university scholars
The Office will serve as a leader in promoting excellence among all university scholars and be recognized as a model in developing multidisciplinary collaborations throughout the campus, local, national, and international communities.
To promote innovation, academic entrepreneurship and scholarly engagement, and to increase research and development, the Office will be redesigned with a focus on service to the university and its scholars. Administrative staff will increase engagement with program officers and funding agencies, build strategic alliances and collaborations, develop a closer relationship with faculty researchers, and highlight the work of student/faculty research teams.
The staff will establish a transparent pipeline of the entire proposal development and project management process — from concept development and proposal submission to project implementation and research sustainability.
Five key research units
Research Compliance
The role of the Research Compliance Unit at Jackson State University is to protect the rights, dignity, health, safety and privacy of research subjects, the welfare of animals and the integrity of the environment. The Unit also works to protect the health, safety, rights and academic freedom of researchers and the reputation of the University in regards to properly conducted, high quality research.
Visit Research Compliance →Technology Transfer
The Tech Transfer Unit assists faculty, staff and students in identifying research with potential commercial interests and helps to develop strategies for how to exploit these interests. Strategies may include patenting, copyrighting and trademarking; seeking licensing opportunities; and promoting startups.
Visit Technology Transfer →Sponsored Programs
The Sponsored Programs Unit primarily handles pre-award services — preliminary review and approval of projects with potential for external sponsorship, funding source identification, cost sharing analysis, compliance review, budget review and approval, and proposal processing. Some post-award functions include negotiation and acceptance of contract and grant awards, facilitating no-cost extensions, change in key personnel, programmatic reports, and subaward/subcontract acceptance and issuance.
Visit Sponsored Programs →Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The JSU Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIEED) leverages the best of JSU's STEM, business and entrepreneurial capabilities, as well as collaborative potential in addressing some of society's most pressing problems (via university-industry partnerships). The CIEED takes advantage of expertise co-location and facilitates the intersection of widely disparate learning and idea generation — a place for constant learning, common vision, as well as creativity and innovation.
Visit Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship →Student Freedom Initiative
At JSU as well as other participating HBCUs and MSIs, students have access to tools to help them succeed academically and professionally. The programs and resources Student Freedom Initiative has created on campuses across the country can provide the resources to help equip students with the knowledge to create pathways to better lives following graduation.
