Our role at Jackson State University
The role of the Research Compliance Unit at Jackson State University is to protect the rights, dignity, health, safety and privacy of research subjects, the welfare of animals and the integrity of the environment.
The Unit also works to protect the health, safety, rights and academic freedom of researchers and the reputation of the University in regards to properly conducted, high quality research.
Research that includes any of the following must be reviewed
Research that includes animals, humans, recombinant DNA, infectious agents, or toxic chemicals must be reviewed by designated university committees before work begins.
Compliance applies to everyone engaged in research
These policies and procedures apply to everyone engaging in research at Jackson State University, whether their current place of work is within or outside University premises. This includes, but is not limited to:

Students
Visiting researchers
Principal investigators
Those with honorary posts
Collaborating partners

Principal Investigator Responsibility: It is the responsibility of the principal investigator to ensure that all researchers involved in the project are aware of and comply with the policies and training requirements of the University and federal funding agencies.
The committees supported by this Unit include the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

The Research Compliance Unit oversees nine distinct compliance areas across JSU research:

Human subjects research review — ensures subjects are treated ethically and their rights and welfare are protected.

Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee
Animal research review — oversees welfare of animals used in research, teaching, and testing.
RCR
Responsible Conduct of Research
Research ethics training and education — required for all federally funded researchers and trainees.
RAD
Radiation Safety
Radioactive materials and radiation-emitting devices — broad scope license administration and user authorization.
BIO
Biosafety
Biological agents, biosafety level protocols, and recombinant DNA research oversight.
HAZ
HAZMAT
Hazardous materials and chemical safety — toxic chemical handling, storage, and disposal compliance.
SEC
Security
Research security, foreign influence disclosure, and classified research compliance.
EXP
Export Control
ITAR/EAR regulations on technology and information transfer to foreign nationals and entities.
FCOI
Financial Conflict of Interest
Researcher financial disclosure for federally funded research — PHS regulations on conflicts of interest.
We help you comply with all requirements
The Research Compliance Unit helps faculty, staff and students comply with all applicable federal, state, and institutional requirements and policies.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)
The role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to review all proposed research involving human subjects and to ensure that subjects are treated ethically and that their rights and welfare are adequately protected.
The IRB process is administered through the Research Compliance Unit.
⚠ Important: IRB Approval Required Before Data Collection
Investigators and student researchers are not allowed to solicit human subject participation or begin data collection prior to receiving IRB approval in writing.
