Be The Change
Graduates provide mental health, school and rehabilitation counseling, and psychometric services in schools, mental health centers, hospitals, and public and private rehabilitation agencies. Our counselors address social problems, assist consumers in productive living, and meet the needs of citizens with disabilities in the state of Mississippi.
The Department offers specialized academic programs that provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to assist individuals and groups in addressing psychological, social, and emotional issues. The curriculum includes courses in human development, abnormal psychology, counseling theories and techniques, rehabilitation services, and psychometric assessment — with additional coursework in research methods, ethics, and cultural diversity.
Hands-on learning happens through internships, practicums, and clinical experiences in hospitals, schools, community centers, and private practices.

CACREP · Clinical Mental Health & School Counseling
The Department received national accreditation for its Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). This prestigious national accreditation status is valid through the next renewal cycle of October 2031.
Counseling, Rehabilitation and Psychometric Services programs are housed within the College of Education and Human Development, which is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The Clinical Mental Health, School Counseling, and Rehabilitation Counseling programs are accredited by CACREP.
Students who complete the master's-level School and Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs meet the criteria required to apply for counselor licensing.

Admission requirements
Applicants must be admitted to both the Division of Graduate Studies and the Counseling Program. In addition to Division of Graduate Studies requirements, the Counseling Program requires:
A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 for regular admission and 2.80 for conditional admission, at the undergraduate level.
Interview and a writing sample.
Three letters of recommendation sent directly to the department.
Applications will only be accepted for Fall or Summer enrollment.
What it takes to graduate
To qualify for a master's degree in the department, students must satisfy three requirements:
Total credit hours required for graduation.
Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above required.
Passing score on the Graduate Comprehensive Examination.

Faculty regularly engage in research and scholarly endeavors. Students are strongly encouraged to present scholarly papers at professional conferences and to publish with faculty.
