The disciplines of epidemiology and biostatistics are essential to achieving the goals of public health, and combining these two disciplines in a single department creates synergies for both training and research.
Epidemiologists study the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. Biostatisticians develop and apply statistical theory, methods, and techniques to public health research data and the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs.

The mission of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is to understand the risk factors of diseases — in particular those affecting racial and ethnic minorities — through research, training, education, and community engagement to improve the health of the public.
Three degree pathways
The department offers Master of Public Health (MPH) concentrations in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Epidemiology.

This commitment is realized in an urban environment that offers a broad scope for students to become involved in diverse communities.
The program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics provides integrated training in graduate-level biostatistics for students seeking to enhance their quantitative data analysis skills in health sciences. Course work contains a substantial amount of application and utilization of tools and skills required to effectively complete epidemiological projects in public health.
No additional internships or practicum are required. Students gain real-world experience expanding outside of the classroom — learning how to succeed by facing real challenges within the community.
