About the School of Social Work
The School of Social Work provides educational opportunities for a diverse group of students to earn degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. Students learn the knowledge, skills, values, and ethics of the profession of social work in a supportive academic environment. The School produces graduates who apply their knowledge and skills to improve the Urban quality of life in Mississippi, the nation, and the world. Through their work, graduates empower vulnerable individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Graduates are expected to demonstrate serious concern for economic, political, and social justice through practice, continuing education, and research.

The B.S.W. and M.S.W. Programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Accreditation (CSWE).
The Ph.D. in Social Work Program is affiliated with the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education (GADE).

The School of Social Work Program seeks to prepare students to become leaders in enhancing the quality of life and seeking solutions to social problems. It is particularly concerned with the consequences of injustice, and thus focuses on the empowerment of at-risk populations and the advancement of social, economic, and political justice in all communities. The program is especially committed to increasing students’ understanding and appreciation of diverse life experiences.

While guiding both traditional and nontraditional students from varied backgrounds toward professional careers in social work, the program seeks to provide special support and sensitivity to students with the potential for success in this field.
