Jackson Heart Study GTEC
The Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center — offering the Daniel Hale Williams Scholar program for graduate Public Health, Liberal Arts, medical, nursing, and pharmacology students.
Training the next generation of public health leaders
The Jackson Heart Study (JHS) Graduate Training and Education Center (GTEC) is dedicated to increasing the capacity of graduate Public Health and Liberal Arts students from Jackson State University and medical, nursing, and pharmacology students from the University of Mississippi Medical Center to develop “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health.”
This is done through the Daniel Hale Williams Scholar program that provides a certificate enrichment curriculum that occurs concurrently with the student's regular academic program. GTEC aspires to improve the science and practice of keeping the public safe and healthy by empowering graduate students to enhance their ability to improve community health as they matriculate through the program with the potential to assume careers in public health or related fields.
Scholars can upgrade their capacity in academic sessions that cover topics such as epidemiology and basic public health skills, and information relevant to public health practitioners.

Daniel Hale Williams Scholar Program
Honor a pioneering legacy in medicine
Named for Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the pioneering African-American surgeon, the DHW Scholar program offers a certificate enrichment curriculum running concurrently with your graduate degree — deepening public health expertise without delaying your academic timeline.
“The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health.”
GTEC MissionWho can apply
GTEC serves graduate students at two partner institutions — Jackson State University and the University of Mississippi Medical Center — across complementary health and social science disciplines.
Three core impact goals
GTEC believes that important goals can be achieved by recruiting public health professionals to take advantage of the training and resources available from the DHW Scholar program.
Reducing the gap in public health expertise operating in underserved communities — bridging the workforce gap where it's most needed.
Improving health care delivery — enhancing the quality and access to care for diverse populations.
Eliminating or reducing health disparities — addressing systemic inequities in health outcomes across communities.
11 cohorts of DHW Scholars since 2013
GTEC has trained 11 cohorts of DHW Scholars over more than a decade of program operation. Click any cohort to view its scholars and their work.
